Its very bad, i wanted to go to Sunset Lake the other day, and actually turned around, i don't want to drive on who knows how many miles of DIRT ROAD and gravel. It starts as soon as you get off highway 10.

your going the wrong way then pointdsm, ive been there almost everyday for the last three weeks, you have to go down hh until you get to lake emily, take a left where the road is for the boat landing at emily, it goes under an overpass, then take first right, then left by charlie's autobody, then it takes you almost there, one more turn thats marked with a sign. make sense or should i put it like this. start at walmart, go down about 13, might be 15 light poles, take a left, stay on there until you get to the farm on the right with the big tractor for sale in his yard, stay on there until you get to the railroad tracks, well they took them out a while ago, but take a left there, straight for about 4 more miles, then take a left where that pack of turkeys is always hanging out in the field, then not much further, take a right by that farm where the dog runs out chasing after your car, then its right up the road

Quite possibly the best directions EVER!!! Hmm, didn't know of that way, i've only went the Sunset way(threw the 5 corner intersection), or down from polonia.

lazyass
07-09-2007, 01:51 PM
the way iam talking about you can't get to from hwy10, you'd have to turn on smokey road i think it is? go down hh all the way to emily, and where the boat landing is on emily, take a left there and it goes under hwy10, then take the first right and you should know the rest of the way if you take the five corners rd

07-09-2007, 01:57 PM
haha I grew up on Smokey Rd. Yeah the way lazyass said is the best way to stay off of gravel most of the way. Except its Ernies Body Shop.

PointDSM
07-09-2007, 02:07 PM
Ah, i figured it out, thanks to mapquest's help. Or I could do the country road thing from polonia, so what if it takes twice as long, is fun to drive :bna

lazyass
07-09-2007, 02:22 PM
the way that i take, the only gravel is on the road to sunset for about a mile, but you don't go that way to go to the car show so there shouldn't be any gravel on the way to the car show i don't think

This year will make the first year in the past 6 years that I'm not gonna be able to make it. In the past I've always come back with at least the back of my truck full of new to me stuff. I'm gonna miss that. Oh, well, makes all the more reason to get more stuff next year.

To the car show:

East on HWY 10 out of Point, Right on Cty K, Left on first road (Old 18), Left after Lake Emily, go across railroad tracks and under highway, Right on next street (old 10), left on 161 (by ernies bodyshop) and from there you guys should know the rest (161 takes you to scandi). That route will keep you off and away from all the dirt/gravel.

Or you can make it a lil easier and just stay on 10 to the hwy B exit, go left on B and left on Q and a right on main st in amherst jct which turns into 161 after you cross the old hwy 10, or is 10 going to be closed by then and thats why you gave these direstions? idk, just trying to help!

True...thats a good way but the BY FAR easiest way there is 10 to Cty B exit (Amherst)....go thru Amherst on B...and stay on it to Iola. lol....and why I didnt think of that before... :dum:

i got this out of the stevens point journal today thought you may be interested:

Show Cars: Antique auto enthusiasts from across the nation will be present throughout the show, with about 2,500 fascinating vehicles ranging from the early 1900s through 1975. Special exhibit areas include the Blue Ribbon, Pre-War, Post-War, Military, Modified and Theme.

Car Corral: More than 1,000 collectible cars, 1987 or older, will be offered for sale by their owners to potential buyers in this special section of the show grounds.

Swap Meet: The Swap Meet area now has 4,428 spaces, loaded with automotive-related items. The Swap Meet area is open four days starting today.

Displays and Exhibits: Displays from major automotive manufacturers, museums and private collectors.

Collector Auction: International Classic Auctions will hold a collector auto auction Saturday on the Iola Old Car Show grounds. With last year's new location directly north of the Car Corral proving to be a hit, car buyers and sellers will have a real treat of having the option to purchase and sell in the car corral or wander two minutes across the field for buying excitement at the ICA Auction. Admission is free. There is plenty of space available in this area, and there will be VIP parking at a fee of $10.

International Alley: Sunday's "International Alley" is garnering a lot of interest from those who collect vintage, European sports cars and saloons. (Saloon is a British word for sedan.) Last year's display featured 59 cars, and this year's edition could easily top 100 entries. Noted automotive author John Gunnell of Krause Publications organized "The Alley" last year as a way to promote and show classic British and European marques as a way of adding visual "sizzle" to Sunday's show.

"Several groups have expressed an interest in coming to Iola for the first time," Gunnell said. "The Fox Valley British Car Club from Oshkosh will again be the anchor for the display, but I expect many others to join the fun."

Gunnell owns two MGs, and the brand generally is credited with starting the British sports car revolution that swept the U.S. automotive world in the 1950s. Fast, nimble and inexpensive, the early TCs and TDs were purchased by the thousands by GIs returning from World War II. They saw British sports cars in England and Europe while serving in the aftermath of the war and fell in love with their style and simplicity. Triumph, Jaguar and a host of other brands soon were vying for a place in the U.S. market. The heyday of British car sales came in the 1950s through the late 1960s, when literally hundreds of thousands of these lightweight roadsters and coupes were sold in this country. Tighter emission and safety standards along with the muscle car revolution helped to put the final nail in the coffin of the British auto industry here in the U.S. By 1981 the "British Invasion" was over.

This year's display also has a new home. The cars will be shown on the grassy display area directly west of the Blue Ribbon area in front of the F&W Publications building. Sunday offers a dazzling array of shiny Austin-Healeys, Triumphs, Jaguars, MGs and many other makes. All owners of British and European sports cars and saloons are invited to participate.

ICA Auction: The Fifth Edition of the International Classic Auction at the Iola Old Car Show will be a one-day affair to be held Saturday. Check-in for auction cars will start at 10 a.m. Friday and will run until 7 p.m. Two big changes are being made this year. The first is the elimination of the old $10 admission to the auction. This year admission to the auction will be free to all spectators and vendors. This should allow more potential bidders to enter the auction activity, making the chances of a good sale even better than before.

The second major change is the reduction of sellers' fees at the sale. Auction entry fees have been reduced to $99, and the sellers' commissions are now just 10 percent on the first $10,000 of the vehicle's sale price and 5 percent thereafter. ICA will credit $50 of the car corral fee toward auction registration

also from the stevens point journal today:

It's hard to believe, but the Iola Old Car Show -- which annually draws more than 100,000 people to see thousands of show cars of every year, make and model -- began with a chicken barbecue.

The date was Aug. 7, 1972. The venue was Olson Park in Iola. As a promotion for the car magazine Spoked Wheel, Krause Publications founder Chet Krause sent two tickets to the Lions Club's chicken barbecue to every person he knew with an old car.

"After the first show, the people just assumed there was going to be a second one," Krause said.

That first gathering drew about 20 cars. The next year there were 90, and the year after that 200.

This year's car show, which begins today and runs until Sunday, features 2,500 show cars, 4,428 swap meet vendor spaces and 1,000 cars for sale, all spread out across 300 acres. Last year, 137,000 people went to the event, making Iola the fourth most populated city in the state for the weekend.

But how did Iola, with a population of about 1,300, come to host one of the largest car shows on the planet?

"I've never been able to figure that out," said Angelo VanBogard, editor of Old Cars Weekly magazine, the present incarnation of the original Spoked Wheel.

He suspects the event's success is because of word of mouth of visitors, collectors and vendors.

"The show works on the basis of Midwestern ideals," he said. "We run it like a family-type event. ... It's still a chicken roast at heart."

In 1975, the event moved to its present home on the grounds owned by Krause Publications, now F&W Publications.

The campgrounds, which today hold 1,600 spots, were developed and a tower was built to serve as a point of reference and meeting spot. The roads that ran up and down plowed fields leading to the grounds were paved.

Collectors say they love that the show is a display of cars, not a competition.

"Normally, they have more rules and regulations," said Dave Lindsay of Manawa, whose 1931 Duesenberg is expected to draw a crowd. "If the horn location is wrong, they run you off."

The Iola Old Car Show became its own non-profit organization in 1984. Some of the profits go into maintenance but most go to the 122 service organizations who provide 2,900 volunteers to work the show.

"Since 1984, we've distributed $4 million to local organizations," Schlabowske said
