I am looking at a really nice first gen rx-7 to throw a small block in.
I was thinking either a 350 or 400. Probably run stock internals with a rebuild and a set of vortec heads(shaved a little to take them to 58cc),intake,mild cam,and the rx-7 v8 headers. And behind that a borg/warner t-5(only 87lbs) out of a 82-92 camaro. I found out you use that tranny and a bell housing of a pre 1982 camaro/nova/corvette. The rear ends are suppose to be plenty strong for a mild v8. Any suggestions on a cam to make descent power? I was thinking max lift .480ish so I don't need to work the heads for bigger springs. Kinda looking at a budget build. Just looking for 350ish ponies.

The 82 to 92 T-5 will not fit the early syle bell housing right. The bolt holes are at a angle on the tranny and bell housings. If you have a t-5 allready I have the oringinal aluminum bell housing from my camaro for sale. A friend of mine also has a saginaw 4 speed from a 70 nova for sale you get tranny bell housing clutch and pressure plate with a hurst competition shifter all for $500.00 I could bring these to the next rsd if you would like to buy them.

now for the cam. I think this one would work good with the vortec heads

Thats actually the cam I was looking at.
The rx-7 site I have been looking at says that that tranny and bell housing is the way to go? I have no idea just going off what that site said.
This is what it said.................
Borg/Warner T-5

- The Borg Warner T-5 5 spd manual transmission, at only 87lbs including the bellhousing, is the preferred choice for a light-weight RX-7 conversion. It was used in the '83 to '92 Camaro/Firebird. '88 and up boxes feature organic synchros, and are called "World Class". The V-6 unit has a 1"-14 spline input shaft (requires a special clutch disc if used with a V-8), while the more desirable V-8 gearbox uses an input shaft with 1-1/8"x26 spline. Overdrive is close to the same as the stock RX-7 at either .63, which came behind throttle body injected engines, or the .73 ratio that was used with Tuned Port engines. The shifter is in the correct spot for the 1st gen cars, and very close for the 2nd generation. Use an older bellhousing with a "straight-up" transmission bolt pattern, rather than the 17 degree angled pattern bellhousing used on the '83 & up Camaro's. Any Nova, Chevelle, or pre- '83 Camaro or Corvette bellhousing will work. This puts the shifter in the middle of the console, rather than off to the left. Our T-5 cross-member has a special angle that permits this application. Aftermarket hydraulic throwout bearings are available for use in these non-hydraulic bellhousings, or a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder can be fitted. Driveline length is the same as the T-350 and uses the same driveline yoke.

I guess you can use them older bell housing's. I just knew that they were at a 17 degree angle, but it seems that is what you need for your application.

I think vortecs blow those away. I am just going to buy the gm performance vortecs. Brand new ready to run 279.00each. I think .480 is the highest you can go on the stock size valve springs?

The best cam to run with a set of stock Vortec is the comp EX-268. I have done mabe 10 of these motors and ever one likes it. You can get the cam and lifters on ebay for $165 and free shipping and a set of Vortec heads from me for $300 like you did last time and your set.

thats probably what I will go with. I think I will just put some new seals and springs in them. What kind of hp do you think is possable with those heads, cam, full lenght headers and air gap intake?

In the March 2000 of Hot Rod they did the Junk Yard Jewels. With that motor Comp EX-268 and Vortec heads they made 394 H.P. This was with a low compression stock NOT REBUILT block. I would think with some head work and some compression 425 easly. Check out the artical. Car Craft did almost the same thing some time ago with the same results. It seams like the perfect combo for the heads. The 268 will start making power at 1600 to 5800. They say this is the largest cam to use with a stock converter. I have new spring seals and can do the porting, let me know.

How much for them with the seals and new springs installed.

I'm pretty sure you will blow up a T5 pretty quick behind a motor that is making any kind of torque. The 82 - 86 T5 is rated at 250 ft/lbs and the 87 - 92 World Class T5 is rated to 300 ft/lbs.

I'm sure it will hold more than it is rated at but still...

I might be sticking with the rotary for a while there pretty sweet. I have a whole parts car with an engine I am going to get ported. A whole 260 hp is possible with the right port job and intake/exhaust combo, I guess. Not bad out of a 76 cubic inch engine! And it revs to like 10k so thats pretty sweet!

yep,its the "hi po" has 4 barrel and lsd rear end and already has the race pipe installed(no crapaladic convertors) and a flow master. Not the fastest thing yet but it's a fun little car,and has been enough to wax a few "ricers" down 8th street.
