I have a friend w/ a 350 that is using oil. We have replaced the intake gaskets, because the bottom of the intake ports(and gaskets) were all oil soaked, and the tops of the intake valves were wet. We eliminated the end seals(silicone instead) thinking that was holding the intake from sealing. Upon disassembly today, the intake looks the same. The gaskets look like they are printing. What am I missing? The engine is rebuilt w/ a set of Summit heads, but not a combination that hasn't been used on a million other sbc's. We are using standard Felpro gaskets. I know I'm not on here a lot lately, but any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

hows the pcv system? Sounds to me like you are sucking up oil threw a evac line into the intake somehow.

X2

Sounds like a PVC or ring seal issue if there is that much oil.

I had the same problem with an 87 crapmaro I had, turned out a couple vaccuum lines were off and it needed a new PCV valve.

The engine is in a '67 Malibu, so there isn't a pcv valve so to speak, but the vent system seems to be working ok. It has the vent breather on the front of the intake, that he had wrapped in a rag, but it was hardly oil soaked. The other vent @ the valve cover is plumbed to the carb. The vent hoses have a slight film, which should be normal for any crankcase vent. If there was oil in the intake ports, I would suspect short block issues, but it is only in the intake ports at the heads. I ran a straight edge across all the surfaces, and there is some irregularities (.002-.004"), but isn't that why we use gaskets? I don't know who did the machine work, he bought the engine rebuilt. The intake is a bone stock Edelbrock Performer.

If the heads have screw-in studs for the rocker arms, make sure sealant of some sort was used when the studs were installed. Most times the studs go all the way to the intake port and if the threads are not sealed the engine can suck oil like mad.
