Has anyone had any experience with Motown blocks? We are having problems with a starter completely engaging the gears on the flex plate, chewing up starters. Does anyone know of a proven starter to work on the Motown block? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

I have had to mill the plate before to get the starter to fully engage.

if its a 2 piece starter put shims between the starter and the aluminum mounting block

I run a Jegs Prostarter part #555-10001 on my motown block with no problems or shims. Works great. Its been on the engine for going on 4 years. Good luck.

Thanks for the input, we milled the starter, seemed to help.
Arndtee did you use the bolts provided & did they bottom out in the block? Ours bottomed out and now milled some off the starter so now the bolts are to long. The starter bolt holes and motor mount hole seem to be cut not as deep as the stock blocks, did you run into this at all?

No I did not have any of the problems you listed. I used the bolts that came with the starter, and didn't use any shims. The only thing I had to do was clock the starter motor a couple holes to gain header clearance. Sorry to hear all the trouble you are running into with this block. The only trouble I had with the entire block was that I had to run tall roller lifters to get the link bars to clear at max lift. Good luck! :hello:
