Is there a difference in the torque of different sized starters? I have 2 chevy starters, one is about 4 1/2" the other is about 4".

I think 400's have a bigger starter? Than the smaller sbc's?

That's not always true.
As for the original question I'm not sure; I would assume it's all about power of the starter's motor?

I think it won't matter. I have used a 2.8 and a 4.3 starter on a 350 before with no problems.

One of them came off my 400, but I don't remember which one. The other is just one I had lieing around.
The reason I ask is, I have the smaller one on now and I'm going to put the bigger one on tomorrow. When I try to start my blazer there is a grinding noise. I'm hoping it's just the teeth on the starter that are messed up, cause I really don't want to put the trans out to replace the flywheel.
I was just courious if there was a difference between the two.

I been there before. I have had some problems with starters more than once. It sucks when you go to turn it over and all your hear is grinding!
