What do you guys think. My friend has a 2000 mustang v-6. He wants to small block it. He has a 289 HiPo with a 302 crank and a mild cam and all else stock. I know the 289hipo makes 271 hp. But I think your supose to get new pistons with that crank cause when he got it before he rebuilt it there were piston skirts broke off two pistons. Is that from the crank? He put two new pistons in it and rebuilt it. Should he get new pistons or just a stock crank? What is a 289 with 302 crank? Should he go with the 289 or just build a 351 or somethin? I heard the 351 is wider than a 302? We want atleat 300+ H.P to keep up with the stock v-8 stangs. I am a chevy man know nothing about fords so if i sound like a retard thats why. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

actually I have been doing some research and the 289 seems like a pretty bad ass engine. They have 3/8 rod bolts stock, beefier main caps ,srew in valve studs, and a pretty good oiling system. I think its like a 301 now?

A 289 with a 302 crank is a 302. If he has a 302 crank in that engine then he also has 302 rods and pistons other wise the pistons would be rammed right thru the cylinder heads.

What Darrell said. The deck on the 351 is taller which is why they end up wider.

The 289 is 4" bore 2.87" stroke. The 302 is a 4" bore 3" stroke...Both engines use the same pistons. The 289 uses a 5.155" long rod, the 302 uses a 5.090" long rod. If he has a 302 crank in it, he needs to have the shorter 302 rods. If he uses the longer 289 rds with a 302 crank the pistons would come .060 out of the whole causing mucho problems....Use the 289 block, 302 crank, 5.090 length 302 rods and 289/302 pistons and you will have an excellent foundation for a 300hp 302 with a 4" bore and a 306 if you bore it .030 over...

Thats what it must be? He is going to stick with the 289, but now he needs a different tranny cause his is electronic.
