should have a 4l60e
If its an auto than it is a 700R4. Don't use the 4.3 mounts if your gonna drop a V8 in it, the motor will sit to high.

So how strong is it and what can be done with it. Does it need a shift kit to lock it in gear or what. I would like to ues the trans if its strong enough. Or would I be better of with a long shaft th350.

If it is a 4L60E then you will need a control unit for it, since all of it's functions are controlled by the computer. A converter for that bad boy will be expensive too. If plan on mainly racing with it then definately put a Th350 in it. I had a few problems with my 700R4 when it came to racing, the worst being the large gap between 1st and 2nd gears. the 3.08 first is great until you hit the 1.52 2nd especially with a high strung small block.
Is there some way to tell the difference between the 700 and the 4L60E from something on the trans or what ever.

Thanks Guys for the help on the trans question. The truck will be coming home on Monday and I will have more time to look at what I have.
Is this truck a new home for your 406?
No that 406 is going to some kid down state? He called and said he would get if some time after the 4th weekend??????? I will have Carl run it with the 4.3 and then in fall pull the motor and do a lite weight 350 with a roller cam and some vortec heads. The 4.3 is going in the silver truck. It got 309,000 miles and it getting tired. These are the plans as of today, might do the motor sooner. Carl has all the parts from his last truck. You said the 4.3 mounts would have the motor sit higher. I wounder what would make that happen seeing that mounts are at the same hight.

The 4.3 mounts will work, but from personal experience if you swap in the 2.8 frame mounts and use the TD motor mounts the motor sits lower and you can run a taller intake.
