Ok, so I'm buying a flywheel over spring break so I can get **** moving.
Flywheel (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?lang=-1&catalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=29123&searchItemId=353305)
Is that what I need for my 1978 400 small block? (Being paired to my T5 in my camaro.) Or do I need a one piece rear seal? I have the right balance? I need a 153 tooth though. Also, what size "clutch diameter" do I need. I have no clue what the stock clutch is on the T5. Thanks.

You need an external balance flywheel for a stock 400. or the bolt on counterweight.

I take it I can't use this though because it's only from 86 to 91? I think I have a 1 piece rear seal. How can I tell?

they did not make a 400 small block with a 1 piece rear main seal, you need a flywheel for a 2 piece rear main seal and for the 400 with the weight on it

Ok. Could I use this flywheel and balance plate? Would this be the correct stuff then?

How do you know you even have a 400? Did you run the casting numbers? A common mistake is that people sell a 350 as a 400 because " someone told them it was a 400 " Can you post up the block casting numbers?

I have looked everywhere for that castign number and it does not cross to anything that I can find. Are you sure you have the numbers right?

Those are the high nickel casting numbers for a 400, from 74-76. I cannot find your casting numbers anywhere on any of the 6 sites that I have looked at.

IN addition the only 400's produced in 1978 had casting numbers of 330817. I am not saying that its not a 400, just think it deserves a closer look..
OR I am looking in the wrong places for info :)

I bought it from sbc412 on the boards here. He said the pistons have .060 written on the back because the block is bored .060 over. He said it's also a 78 2bolt block. Pictures..

You can see from the pic that the block buldges out at the cylinders so it's definately a 400. Not that it matters but the date code is just up from where the block numbers are and yes that balance plate and flywheel you have listed together will work.

No problem at all! Atleast everything is now squared away!
Cool, I ordered that flywheel and balance plate. I'll post some progress pictures later or something. Thanks for the help!

It seems this is a little late but centerforce sells a 153 tooth flywheel for the 400 here it is at jeg's http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?lang=-1&catalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=21591&searchItemId=66295
it is a misprint that says 143 tooth the catalog says 153 tooth
you will also need a 10.5 inch cluth and pressure plate.

I thought the stock camaro clutch was 10.4"? What I bought is for a 10.4" clutch. Basically I'm looking for a cheap way to get this thing moving. It's not a daily driver, and once the end of summer comes I'm going to find a good tranny.
10.4 will work some list them as 10.4 others as 10.5 same clutch

make sure to get the correct oil pan also, that 400 came in a truck so the sump is probly too large and your y-pipe will not fit back into place, i have ran into this problem before on 3rd gen camaros, you need the smaller car oil pan
