Well my brother called me and told me he knocked 3 teeth off the ring gear in the diff in his '98 Z28 convertible. It has a bone stock LS1 and 6 speed. This comes after a complete rebuild late last summer at Automatic Rebuilders and another complete rebuild about 9 months before that. I've read these rears are weak, but this is getting rediculous.

What are some options to make the damn thing last? He is a normal 24 year old guy, but the tires are skinny Blizzaks and blew the gear set on a pretty standard 2-3 shift. He had already stuck over $1200 in the damn POS.

HELP!!!

He needs a 9" or a 12 bolt. The factory rear will hold up better with an auto, but the 6 speeds just tear them up.

Moser makes a killer 9inch or 12bolt for the 4th gen but they are pricey.

I'd just take it easy on teh launches on the street and at the track, maybe buy some slippery tires for the rear.

The 7.5's are weak, but maybe a girdle and a proper install with the correct backlash setting will help this to last longer.

Some shops use a dial indicator to set pinion depth and mesh, but I have always done it by feel and a grease marker on the teeth. The few times that I have set them up with a dial indicator, they make noise.. screw it.
