I'm not to familiar with sleeving a cylinder, so I have a couple of questions, if anybody has an option on the topic I would like to hear it.
Would sleeving a 396 affect the build-up potential, or should sleeved cylinder blocks be used for only mild build-ups?
Is there anything to be concerned with a sleeved cylinder or is it "good as new"?
Roughly how much would a machine shop charge to sleeve a cylinder in a BBC?
Thanks!

There is no problems with sleeved cylinders as long as they're installed correctly and the damage to the original cylinder wasn't too bad. If there are piece's actually missing from the original cylinder, I would try to find a different block for a high preformance use but if it's just cracked or dinged up it would be good as new. Terry's Engine rebuilding in Howard will install a sleeve for $85.00.

Back in the day, Pro Stock racers used to take brand new Cleveland blocks and sleeve every hole before it made a single pass. I just had my brand new Dart block sleeved, you can hardly tell.

So when you get a cylindar sleeved, the actual diameter of that cylindar is less than the other cylindars?

Nope. It will match.

The block get's overbored to the o.d. size of the sleeve and the sleeve get's bored to match the other cylinders.

So I bought a 412 (a 400 bored .060 over) small block. Can this be sleeved? One time someone said "woah those walls are thin". Can my block not be bored anymore even to sleeve it?

There is no problem boring it bigger to install a sleeve. When boring that big to install the sleeve, it get's close to the steam holes and head bolt holes and usually cracks the deck of the block from the bolt hole to the sleeve. As long as the fire ring is sitting on the sleeve, there would be nothing to worry about.
