ya know all in all even with the 3.08 gears and the 4 speed it seems to be a ok set up ..the truck has no problems letting the tires go threw second gear...(i got aset of traction bars tonight so maybe that will fix that problem)

The rear you are going to have to look for is the 8.5 from later model 4.3HO manual transmission trucks. You will know it when you look at the axle tubes...

What kind of 4 speed is it? What are the ratios in it? You are looking for something around 10:1 for final drive in first gear.

 My 4.3 2-wd s-10 gets rubber in 3 gears with 30 inch tall BFG's on it . Keep that 305 in there and I'll race ya at RSD :woot:

Yeah good luck finding one of them, and the price them go for you can put a 9" in there. The 7.5 & 7 5/8 rears aren't that bad, you can beef them up pretty good on a budget. I never broke anything on either the bird or my truck and you know i was not nice to either them. For around $300 you can make that rearend hold 400hp easy.
If thats a saginaw 4 speed its gonna break the first time you get it to hook. I've broke plenty of them just on the street. Find a muncie or swap in an auto with a nice converter.

i had a 89 long box 2wheel drive with a goorich crate motor 2.8 and welded posi 4.10's out of a 4banger truck and a five speed and i could churp them goin into 3rd gear with some p295 50r 15's (about 12.5" wide) and smoked alot of unsuspcting cars off the lights including alot of 4.3's and it was the brake stand king for a stock motor i could keep em spinnin in third gear would bog down in third but still spun 4th gear didnt work out
