I have a 96 Dodge 1500 4x4 318 with a automatic.Well since I bought it the tranny acted up.All the gears work perfect besides when it shifts from 2 to 3 it wont shift unless you let off the gas and are going around 40-45 mph then it kicks in and then it shifts into overdrive perfect. The tranny dont slip it shifts firm and no other gears act up.I dont know much about trannys but I think its a seal.Does anyone know someone who works on trannys reasonably.I would pull the tranny and deliver it and I dont want to waste alot of money on this truck so I would just want whats wrong fixed not totally rebuilt.Yes I changed the fluid and filter.

Sounds like a sticky valve body.

Sounds like a common Dodge problem. Wait until the rear end or front axle goes. Your trans issue might not be the trans. I believe they are electronic shift......not sure if they were in 96 or not but its something to check. Dodge has had alot of problems with their drivetrains in pick ups and Durangos.

check for codes and monitor your trans speed sensers to make sure they read right

Good luck with that Dodge tranny. My sister went through 4 of them in her 360 powered '97 4x4 1/2 ton. Once it was a broken accumulator spring that went through the clutch packs and stuck in the valve body. Another was a broken torque converter blade and clutch. Another I believe was a broken sprag and I think she had the 3-4 apply piston crack. I hope that fixed these problems with the new HEMI trucks.

the new hemi motors in trucks are having problems with the valve springs arent' they? ive heard that from a couple different tech's
I know alot of people that have had to have the tranny done in them trucks, it must be a common problem. Good luck with it.

im not a huge fan of auto select but my boss had the exact same problem with his dodge (same year), he went to curtasy motors and they swore up and down it was a bad tranny, they wanted to change it which would have costed 2500 bucks, so instead he went to auto select ( the old all car) and they ended up flashing the computer to erase the ECM. the throttle position sensor was telling the computer that there was no throttle which the computer was telling the tranny the same thing, any way, id suggest going there before curtasy or even pulling the tranny, all said and done my bosses dodge costed under 30.00 to fix, its worth looking into first before spending big money
