View Full Version : Gear question
My car has a 7.5 rear with a 2 series carrier in it, its not a limited slip, which really sucks. I would like to buy the zexel unit from SLP for it, but they are 3 series carriers. I don't won't to buy new gears, because the 3.73's i have are new. so is there some sort of spacer or something to adapt a 2 series gear to a 3 seriers carrier?
My plan is to install the zexel carrier with some aftermarket hardened 28 spline axels, a support cover and weld up the axel tubes to prevent breakage. I have done alot of research and this seems to work good up to about 400hp. Only gonna cost around $400 if i can get my gears to work.
well so much for my rear end question, i went to pull out one of the axles tonight and found about a hand full of metal shavings inside. Everthing looks good, but something obviously isn't right. I think i'm gonna start looking for a different rearend. Anybody know where i can get a 82 to 92 f-body rearend, thats a posi. I'll buy gears if i have to.
And no i'm not buying a $2000 9" or 12 bolt.

Doesn't a Grand National rear fit in that car? Talk to abot316 or Z28kid. They are the F-body gurus on this site. CULater might have answers for you too.

you can't use web based email addresses (hotmail, yahoo, etc.) on chitown. Too many people using phony email accounts and shit like that.

the Grand National is a G body, wont work, My brother has a ford 9" in has 94 camaro, its not that pricey. Its very easy to weld brackets on an older firebird/camaro 12 bolt, I can get you one cheap. does your age car have the torque bar going to the transmission?
it has the torque arm.....how cheap??

Im thinking under 200 for a complete rear.
What year is it? And what gear ratio?

older , like 69 or 70 one is out of a chevelle, and one was in a RAIII firebird., i guess for that much you could get a 9" and weld your brackets on. and parts are alot cheaper for the 9".
I decided to go ahead and redo the one i got, i found that one of the shims inside the carrier is what came apart on me. I ordered a Auburn carrier and some moser 28 spline axles along with a solid spacer to replace the crush sleeve to prevent the pinion from walking up the gear. Common problem with these rears i guess. I don't ever plan on putting slicks on it, so this should make it good and strong for the street. I've seen the same exact rear with all this shit done to it run low 12's and get constant abuse with slicks, so i should be good.

I have seen guys runnin high 10s with 7.5 rears. but i wouldnt. you wont have any problems with that set up even with sticky tires if you stay belo 400hp.:D:

if it makes you feel better the 2002 camaro ZL's have the 7.5" and they put out 600 HP and 575 Ft lbs of torque with a 6 sp, but they were told if they ever got traction it would gernade the rear.
My brothers 2000 SS has the same rear in it, i think all SLP does is put in a stronger carrier, Ive seen those cars dyno 300 plus rear wheel hp stock. but i'm pretty confident that it will hold together. It just sucks that i have to wait till next year to fine out how fast the damn thing is.

ya, its only going to bust if you get a real hard launch, a buddy was running a 406 small block in a G body and launching off the line with NOS and it lasted, is that a c-clip rear or floater?
Its got those damn c-clips in it. I wish it had discs in the back, atleast that would stop the axle from coming out if it broke. I've never broke an axle in anything yet, but theres always a first time.

very unsafe, I was lucky and found an 8.5 10 bolt with drums and no clips, a floater.
