So, I put the trans back in the blue car today and took it home to put some miles on it and get the bugs worked out of it before Eric goes out to beat up on the ricers with it. The trans is running a bit on the hot side. Like 240 degrees on the highway. I did alot of pulling over on the way home. Other than that, the trans works awesome. Converter stalls at 4500 on the brake. The car ☺☺☺☺in' boogies now!!!!

Anyway, what do you guys run for temp on the trans???? What do you guys have for a trans cooler set up? We have tried 2 different trans coolers. No change in temp. We have steel 5/16 lines coming out of the trans going to the cooler. The cooler is about the size of a magazine. Too small? This same trans ran 160 degrees in my 65 with the same cooler. WTF? Any info would be greatly appreciated. This car is kicking my ass all over the place!!!!! I need to figure this problem out so Eric can drive the car and not worry about problems.

Nope, ran the same with the 10 inch TCI converter. Tim is running a 9 inch Coan converter and his trans temp runs 160 all day long.

For some reason I am thinking the tranny should be about 10 degrees warmer then your water temp.
I don't remember where I saw this. I may be wrong.

I have heard that too........plus or minus 10 degrees of engine temp. I still would like to know where everyone else is running at for temp and what they are running for a cooler and shit. I can't believe that Eric's car is the only car out there with a trans temp gauge and a trans cooler..............

my cooler is 13"x13" and is mounted to the front of my radiator. i have an lx so there is more air hitting it while driving than a gt, but i still don't have a gauge to tell you how hot it runs. do you still have that black plastic flap hanging down off the bottem of the core support? that directs air up at the radiator too. also, is the ac condensor still on the front?(don't think that would matter though)

i don't know darrell. if i can think of any other ideas to think about i will let ya know.

flap is still there and the condensor is gone......that is about the size of the one that is on there.....it is probably 15"x8" or so......

Turn the fan on.... lol j/k

Try spacing the cooler away from the front of the radiator. If they are together the heat from the radiator is going to keep the temps up.

I dont have a tran temp gauge. I really wish I did.......but they are kind of expensive.
I run a red TCI racing cooler about 12"x12" with -6 braided line.
I plan on getting a B&M racing cooler with the small fan mounted on it .

My 33 year old son tells me my radio is'nt loud enough when I tell him I'm hearing an unusual sound from my cars. Welcome to the world of street/strip cars. I tried that before with my first 65 plymouth. I drove 100 miles to Union Grove @ 52mph, 3000rpm and watched the engine temp rise to 245, god knows what the tranny temp was. I pulled up to the line for the first time on all new parts at that temp and ran a 12.66, 12.70, 12.68. There was no 4th run the 4400 converter was totally gone. Coan had just gone thru it and freshened it up. I drove it home by putting it in neutral, revving it up and slamming it into 1st gear. It got me home. The engine went on to 1500 more passes and the trans was rebuilt three more times. Possibly your gauge is'nt accurate.

On my trans temp gauge I never saw over 180, driving, racing. fluid will make a difference, what are you running. Its getting hot because its slipping, either the convertor or inside the trans. I had the large cooler, it was like 14"x16"

It has B&M trick shift in it now. Previously had Type F. Didn't make a difference. I think the headers might be cooking the tranny lines.....I'll have to look into it. I think we are going to end up putting a bigger cooler on it too.
