i have a 85 camaro and im building a 355 for it. The stock oil pump has some ugly looking gears so im in the market for a high volume pump. Will a stock pump be suffiecient? which manufacturer would you guys recommend for a high volume pump?

A stock pump will be sufficient for a mild engine. Make sure it is a quality pump such as a Melling. A high volume pump will draw a bit more horsepower than a stock pump and I would not recommend a high volume pump with a stock oil pan. After 6000 rpm with a stock pan you can suck the pan dry.

Yeah stay away from the high volume pumps, I have a stock pump in my engine and it always has good pressure, I tried the high volume one once and it would leak out of the front seal under high RPM.

just keep the pickup about a 1/2" from bottom of pan and you will be fine, do remember to at least tack weld pickup to pump

I like the Melling M55A Z 28 pump. It has nicer internal anti-cavitation gears. It will give you a little higher pressure, but you can install the standard spring and pick up some additional hp. :smoker:
