View Full Version : i bought a new ride
Well after much searching, i finally bought a car. 1986 trans am, TPI 350 with vortex heads and all sorts of goodies. New 700R4 and about a $3000 paint job. Needs some minor work to finish up but should be a fun car when done. It was my brothers, he bought a 2000 Camaro SS thats hit in the back so he needed the cash to fix it up. Got a good deal. Its by no means a race car..should run mid to low 13's the way it is, but with a blower..should be a low 12 second car. All i got to say is there's a shit load of wires going to that motor..should be fun to work on..lol.

It won't be that bad to work on once you learn what all the sensors are and what they do. I will say though, an EFI 87-93 Mustang is hands down the easiest EFI vehicle to work on. Everything is basic.........which could be because Ford is usually behind the times. But like I said, that T/A will not be bad once you learn the car.
Does it look as good as your truck does????? Are you going to take it to the track yet this year?

UMMMMMMMMMM I give you all of two weeks before you turn into Darrell and start swearing at the EFI system on the car and swear you are going to put a carb on it. Having owned an 87 Iroc and reading into what works on the cars I can tell you that the EFI will be a nightmare for you. The GM computers work entirely different than the Ford stuff. Gm basicly has a box with a grid in it. The computer looks in each grid for the correct parameters that the sensors are giving them. If any sensors are giving a reading that doesn't work into the preprogrammed grid it goes to the default. I have heard of even minor work such as a cat back system affecting the computer enough that a new chip needs to be burned. Then when you make the next mod you need a new one. Yes the early GM TPI is a mass air system but in the GM computers mind the mass air sensor is just another parameter not like the Ford system where it is more or less the primary sensor. Also be forwarned those cars are pigs, and I wouldn't be surprised if that car even with the mods it has only run in the 14's. I have only seen two 3rd gen f-bodies run faster than the 15's, my Iroc was one. Last time out to the track down here there was an early GTA Trams Am with a 5 speed running 13's. I didn't ask if it was a 305 or 350, but he must have had a good amount of work done to it as I could tell it was cammed. Best of luck on your new ride, enjoy it and lets us know how it does.

It looks probaly just as nice..alittle darker blue than my truck, but both were painted by my brother, so the quality is the same. My brother pretty much built the car from the ground up, it was just a shell when he got it, put the engine, tranny, rearend and interior in it and got it almost done, still needs shocks, brakes and the dash fixed, it has a digital dash that works worth a shit and the engine is a 89 while the car is 87, so theres no cold start vavle on the engine, so it needs the correct fuel rail. I would like to change it over to a speed density system so i can avoid all that shit. Theres work to be done yet, so no track time this year..i'll have it done by next year, with some more mods to make it go fast. I'll take some pics this weekend for everybody to see.
Sounds great. Good luck.
Maybe you will be surprised by how good it really goes.

On the GM cars there is really no difference in performance between the Mass air and speed density, but just as the 5.0 the mass air cars are prefered over the Speed density.

Speed density isnt that bad to work with. You just have to take a few more of the perameters into consideration. It's easy to tweak things to fool the ecm into doing what you want. Well, it is on imports anyhow, and turbo dodge's, but not to sure about the GM stuff. Should be the same. As far as mass air- flow, gravy to say the least.
