I have a friends 97 ram, 2500 with a 5.9 (360), and its getting coolant in the oil. i pulled the heads, the block looked good, machine shop said heads were warped-they resurfaced the heads, but now back on the truck, i went to change the oil before fire up, and you can watch coolant come out the pan in a steady stream. any ideas where it could be coming from? its not just draining down from the top either, if you put the draain plug back in and let it sit for 15-20min, you get probably 1/4-1/2 quart out, so its leaking pretty fast, but from where?

You might have a cracked cylinder.....
Does the radiator level drop drastically too?

yes, the radiator level drops fast--i was wondering if it could possibly be the front cover?? i was going to take it off, but the fan is so tight i cant get it loose, even with a 2 foot cheater bar!!

pull the oil pan off and pressure up the coolant system and watch could even have a cracked block

just got the front cover off, the gasket was cracked- talked to a few people on dodge websites, no one has ever heard of this happening. for some reason those people love these trucks.

I am a Ford guy but I own a Suburban because Ford has nothing that compares or can compete with a Suburban.

Um the excursion, although you will pay much more for one if you can find one with the TD.

Excursions don't compete. Drive a fully loaded Excursion and then drive a fully loaded Suburban or Yukon XL. GM wins hands down. It really hurts me to say that but its the truth.

My dad used to have a '97 ram 1500 5.2L and had the same problem with the gaskets cracking.. there was a TSB out on the problem and they fixed it under the warranty, it only had 20,000 miles on it when that happened.. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as what you described though.

the plate on the underside of the intake causes the engine to suck oil, not antifreeze, the same guy has another dodge that did that and it was burning a quart in 250 miles.
where the timing cover gasket cracked, the water out let on the block is about 1", and it cracked in the 4 o-clock position(on the right side of the block), if it would have cracked in the 6-11 o-clock positions, it would have been an external leak and easily found!! this guy has nothing but problems with these two trucks, but he wont get rid of them.....resale value on them isnt much though..

dodge trucks dont' seem to hold value at all, a ford beats it :(

I was an employee for a dodge dealership for many years and Yes that cover gasket is an issue but most of the time it will leak on the outside first .
Don't forget to put the updated intake plenum gasket in also oil consumption issues and spark knock
