View Full Version : belt slippage..

Hopefully some of you will have some ideas on how to stop my belt from slipping. My car is supercharged (centrifugal), the belt was slipping when it was only making 3 lbs of boost. The manufacturer said to tighten the belt damn near to the point of breaking and to use belt dressing on it every two weeks. That seems like a real half-assed fix to me, but for now its working. If I get a smaller pulley though (which I want to in the near future), I can only imagine its going to be slipping even more. The engine is transverse mounted and there's a lot of structural metal already less than half an inch away from the stock pulleys, so I can't put anything wider on there.. I can't move the supercharger anywhere either to run a separate belt, its on a 2 foot shaft from the opposite side of the engine already..

Any ideas? Is there some brand of belt thats more sticky or something I can do to the pulley to give it a little more bite?

i you want to spend a few bucks you could change the pullys and belt to a belt like on a blower but smaller in width i know they make em i seen one on a paxton supercharger that was on a mustang running like 28 psi of boost

good luck

Yeah, I was gonna say you should look into a cog style setup. If nothing else, maybe you could take some sandpaper or something and rough up the smooth surface on the pulleys?

I never thought about a cog style setup.. How would that work exactly, does every pulley need to have the teeth on it or would just the crank and blower pulleys need it? And do they make a cog style belt thats like 4 feet long? :D:

I can't run a separate belt though if thats what you're thinking with the cog setup.. no clearance to do that.. I tried taking a picture but the only thing you can see is the blower pulley, everything else is pretty well buried and not even showing up in the picture..

Oh, I thought you had a separate pully off the crank for the blower...:(: Maybe you could cut some little slots perpendicular to the grooves in the pulleys in question. It would give some biting edges that the belt could grab on to. I'll have to take a look at it next time I get down that way...or if you ever get that damn thing running right and bring it up by me!:spinem:

I wish it was separate.. but nope, everything runs off of one belt. I thought about getting some grooves cut in the pulley, I saw that once before on a supercharger.. i didn't ask the guy if it actually did any thing though.. heh.. It runs great though, just needs new tires and an alignment before I take it more than a few miles from home..

yea thats kind of a trick with your set up. i seen an old guy once where his alternator belt was slippin so the old crazy took a screw driver wraped it with sand paper and started the engine up and held it on all the pullys. crazy as hell but it did work. lol not my hand

TIME IS MONEY

I`M SURE TAKING OFF THE PULLEYS OR DOING IT ANOTHER WAY WOULD HAVE TAKEN TO MUCH TIME

TO ME IT WOULD NOT BE WORTH MY HAND!!!!!!!!

I don't know if you have room for this but you could fab a bracket to locate an idler pulley in a position to provide more belt wrap on the pulley. It doesn't take much to make an imrovement. This will also provide more tension at the point of slippage by eliminating some belt stretch near the supercharger.

cog is deffinetly the way to go, took me many many belts to finally realise that, but they are expensive, i ended up paying 500 for my set up but they machine pulleys right there for your applications, check them out......www.blackmountainprecision.com
