Car:
1996 Subaru Impreza, AWD, automatic, 2.2L. The car is all stock with 104k miles. We've put about 10k miles on it.

Symptoms:
The car drives fine. This problem is when the car is stopped, in drive with the brake pressed.

I have always noticed when I am stopped and in drive, the car seems to shake or something of that nature, almost like it is not running smooth, sort of like something causing "drag" on the engine idle. If I shift to neutral, then it idles smooth and the shake/drag goes away. I've also heard a noise, a switch/click/tick in which the car will instantly run while in drive (with the brake pressed) the way it should. Sometimes, I can creep forward, and then the car will be fine while in drive with the brake on. When you accelerate (at any rate), there is no delay or issues.

I've had two occurances where I have gotten in the car, started it shifted into reverse backed out of a parking space, and then shifted into drive to move forwards. When I attempted to move forwards, the car seemed to be half in drive and half out. It was moving but there was "slippage" or something where the vehicle wasn't going forwards the way it should. I tried to go into park and then back to drive, 1, 2, reverse, but not luck, all the gears had this slipping issue. I shut the car off, turned it back on and it was fine. This has happened twice, maybe a thousand miles apart.

Today, I noticed in the parking lot I was at full lock (steering) and the car seemed to slip jump/grab when I would move forwards (under throttle, not idle). This is not a tires jumping AWD issue, I've felt that before this isn't the same.

I'm not sure what the problem could be. The previous owner had one of the CV joint replaced, could the other one be bad? The transmission fluid looks good and does not smell.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks folks.
