A few questions for when I relocate my battery to rear of car were the spare tire was. This area is not sealed from the rest of the car

1. If I use a optima red top sealed battery do I still need to use a sealed and vented battery box?

2. When hooking up the disconnect switch do I hook it up to the neg. or pos. cable ?

2a. Make sure you use some big gauge cable when running the alt. lead back to the switch or it won't charge like it should.

I was told I didn't need a battery box with an Optima battery so I don't use a box. GLD and WIR passed me numerous times thru tech. If I need a box I'd like to know for sure so I don't ever run into problems. Can someone elaborate or quote the rule word for word please.

if you have a hatch-back car like a camaro you need a sealed battery box with a vent tube to the outside,, or you need to seal off the trunk from the interior of the car with a barrier(im not sure of the specs)

if you have a trunk that is sealed off from the drivers area then you are ok with a non sealed battery mount

To elaborate a little more,"All wet cell batteries must not be relocated into the driver or passenger compartment and must be securley mounted. A maximum of two(2) automobile batteries is permitted of 150lbs maximum combined weight. Plastic battery hold down devices are not permitted. All relocated batteries must be secured with a minimum of two(2) 3/8" diameter bolts or rods. When relocated to the rear of the vehicle, the passenger compartment must be protected by a "firewall" consisting of a minimum of .024" steel or .032 aluminum. The On/Off switch must be connected to the positive side of the electrical system and when de-activated, shut off all electrical functions of the vehicle." :thumbs_up

Also remember that you will want to run from the positive post on the starter to anything that needs constant power like the memory for your radio etc...

Will that matter? When the switch is off everything has to be killed.

it will be turned off, but you won't lose your station presets

Hey Kamu, I'm with Darrell on this one. When I built my pinto wagon, I had a dry cell battery w/out a vented box and they passed it no questions asked. In the back of my station wagon. (No firewall or sealed compartment)

Kamu doesn't have to worry about that stuff anymore. He has a race car now, he has no need for a alternator!!!!

I thought everything had to be killed when the switch was off. The only way to get power to that lead would be to run it right to the positive post on the battery, right?

I had a brain fart. You need to run the memory wire from the post on the alternator, it will be hot always since it is on the batery side of teh main cutoff switch.
